Target Group

The Paper A workshop is aimed at EQE candidates who have recently passed the pre-examination and are beginning their preparation for the full examination. The workshop will also be of benefit to candidates who will be resitting Paper A.

The workshop is exclusively for epi students. The epi offers the possibility to become an epi student to be able to participate in the workshops, detailed information how to become an epi student can be found here

The Paper A workshop will introduce participants to the formal and practical requirements of Paper A and how to prepare an answer.

In more detail, the workshop will explain to participants the formal requirements for Paper A including the components of a paper and of an answer and will explore in interactive sessions how to identify features of the independent and dependent claims together with drafting a suitable introduction. Participants will have an opportunity to prepare an answer to a Paper A after which the paper will be discussed and analysed. The workshop will be provided by two tutors who may each provide their personal advice and approach on dealing with paper A. The workshop is however not intended to provide a specific methodology.

Practical considerations will include:

  • identifying the basic principle underlying the invention as presented in the letter of the client,
  • an analysis of the prior art in view of the basic principle
  • the number and category of independent claims and how the claims might be presented,
  • the number, content and structure of dependent claims
  • how to formulate an introduction including presenting the prior art and the invention.

Day 1 of the workshop will present underlying concepts to participants and allow them to put those concepts into practice in small groups, followed by plenary discussions to provide feedback and explore alternatives. Day 2 will focus on participants preparing an answer to Paper A in stages followed by an analysis of the paper and possible answers together with suggestions for subsequent self-study.

After the workshop there will be the possibility of a follow-up tutorial (included in the workshop fee). Within the framework of the follow-up tutorial, participants can have their answers to paper A produced on Day 2 of the workshop corrected by an epi tutor and individual feedback will be given.
