"Collaboration with overseas patent colleagues"

In the practice of a patent attorney, it is important to cooperate with colleagues in other countries. Whereas European patent attorneys are generally most knowledgeable about the European and perhaps the national patent systems, it is necessary for them to have some knowledge of the practice in countries in which their clients also want to obtain patent protection. Further, overseas colleagues may have clients that want to obtain European patents, for which these overseas colleagues use European patent attorneys to act as a local patent agent.

Canada has dramatically changed its intellectual property statutes over the last few years, and this is particularly true of the Canadian Patent Act. More changes are however on their way. This webinar will discuss recent and upcoming changes in Canada’s Patent Act and their impact on Canadian patent practice and will provide useful practice tips to navigate pitfalls.

David Ruston is a registered Patent Agent in Canada and the United States and is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and advises clients on all aspects of IP, from protection through to enforcement and strategic management of third party IP risks. David represents clients before the Patent Appeals Board of the Canadian Patent Office, and also has significant experience in multi-jurisdictional due diligence, including the preparation of patentability, freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, performing due diligence in commercial transactions involving IP assets, and providing technical support in litigation matters. David has been recognised as a leading patent practitioner and has been recommended in the IAM Patent1000 guide since 2015.
